How many serums is too many serums? That is the question.
We all love a serum; this much is true. Well, we love A LOT of serums these days. And that’s OK! It really is. But, surely we need to stop somewhere before we end up re-mortgaging our dang houses to feed our serum fetish…? (Answer: we never stop buying all the serums, c’mon). Perhaps most importantly when you've finally bought all those tingly potent serums, is how to make them play nicely together.
Firstly, we need to remember that all serums are not created equal. And for that, we are thankful! Some serums have ‘active’ ingredients (think Vitamin C, Vitamin A, Niacinamide, Glycolic Acid etc.), which all come with a recommended ‘dose’ – and can also have interactions with each other. We then have some serums that do not contain the same type of ingredients; rather, ingredients that can be used in harmony with active serums, which can be used more regularly, sans problems.
So... Why layer?
Well, quite frankly, there are so many different products around, each packing some wonderful ingredients that your face totally deserves – but there is simply not enough face/time to handle all that goodness if you were to use them all individually. So, ENTER: the serum layering cocktail.
What should we layer, and what should we use as a dedicated treatment?
It is best to stick with one active per routine, and layer up with hydrating and nourishing serums on top of that. Use your active serum first, then add your layering serums after, from thinnest to thickest consistency. If you are using a specifically high potency treatment (perhaps this has been prescribed by your Doctor), then this would be best used on it’s own, either AM or PM).
Here’s an example of Active Ingredients vs Layering Ingredients:
Active Ingredients
Vitamin C
Glycolic Acid
Salicylic Acid
Lactic Acid
Niacinamide
Vitamin A (Retinol)
Ferulic Acid
Layering Ingredients
Vitamin E
Pre/Pro Biotic Ferments
Hyaluronic Acid
Glycerin
Beta Glucan
Oat Kernal Extract
The result of a serum layering routine should be a wonderfully well rounded application of ingredients, which will leave you feeling nourished and hydrated, and content in the knowledge that your face is completely cared for.
Remember – do your homework first, and enjoy your never ending skincare routine options!
